As Luna's proud human, I've learned a lot about house training a puppy, and I'm excited to share some tips that worked wonders for us. These tips will work for any breed:
1. Establish a routine: Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after waking up, eating, and playing. Puppies have small bladders and need to go often. A consistent schedule will help them learn when to expect potty breaks.
2. Use positive reinforcement: When your puppy eliminates outside, reward them immediately with praise, treats, or a favorite toy. This helps them associate going potty outside with positive outcomes.
3. Supervise closely: Keep a close eye on your puppy indoors. Watch for signs they need to go, such as circling, sniffing, or squatting. If you catch them in the act inside, interrupt them and take them outside immediately.
4. Clean accidents thoroughly: Use an enzymatic cleaner to clean up any accidents in the house. This will eliminate odors that might attract your puppy to the same spot again.
5. Be patient and consistent: House training takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if your puppy has accidents. Just keep following the routine and rewarding them for going outside.
Bonus Tip: We put a hanging bell by the back door and rang it every time we took Luna out. Before long, she was ringing the bell on her own and letting us know she needed to go. This helps when you have a busy home and can't always be on the alert. The good news is Malshis are smart! It only took us about 3 weeks before she had it down. The occasional accident continues to happen now and then, but it gets better every day.
